A lot of cities have single family-only zoning. Single family homes are culturally, part of the American dream we were promised back in the 50s after soldiers came back from WWII to start families. Seattle, Portland and now Minneapolis are all contemplating (or implementing) a change to the zoning in these areas to allow duplexes and triplexes as housing has become increasingly unaffordable for people living in these areas. Urban centers are where jobs are and, in the case of California, the source of the most intense demand for housing. Can duplexes and triplexes change the dynamic by having two or three families living in the same footprint as one family? Are there negative consequences of doing so and are these consequences better or worse than the alternative? These are all questions we need to ask as we contemplate the future of housing in San Diego.
